Romulation.net is Dead!!!

Update 06/23/08: Romulation.net Cheated Death!

For years NES & SNES Emulation has been continuously growing more popular. But for those years Nintendo was not loosing any money from people Emulating there old games. But with the Wii's Virtual Console, suddenly Emulation becomes a guanine threat to there swimming pools full of money. And sadly it seems that they are cracking down and taking out that threat.

One of the biggest Nintendo ROM sites on the net Romulation.net, has officially been shut down by the ESA with a cease and desist notice. I am not sure when they officially closed shop, but it is definitely a sign that Nintendo is starting to take action against the piracy of there old games.

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) is a very ageing console and it's games have slowly but surly gotten harder to come by over the years. Which of course means that the SNES games that are out there have had steadily rising prices. The result of this is people like me who grew up on the NES & SNES are starved for there favorite classics but don't want to fork out the ridiculous asking prices on sites like e-Bay and Amazon for the original cartridges.

So what options does that leave us? I know that the virtual console has some great games on it but it is mostly only the high profile games that are being ported over to it. And even if all of the games you want are on the Virtual Console there is still something to be said for playing them with the controllers they were made for.

So that leaves only one option, PC Emulation. I in no way do I endorse piracy, but what a mighty temptation it is to just go get all of your favorite classic games for free, no mater how obscure they are. And then you can play them with enhanced graphics, Classic controllers and you can even get mod's and expansion packs for them and that is not even mentioning the ability to play them online.

With Nintendo doing what they can to put a stop to the mainstream availability of NES & SNES ROM's they are also making it very hard to acquire many of there greatest classics. So it is my hope that they already relies this and will start working on more quickly building the VC library and also start offering them at a fairer prices. Or even possibly start offering a PC equivalent of the Virtual Console and still allow all of the gaming community to continue Modding and enhancing the games like any other retail PC game.

The only thing left that needs to be said is give me back my EarthBound, Harvest Moon and Metal Warriors Nintendo!!!!

  1. Yes I was also supprized and sad to find this out. I thought Romulation was one of the best roms sites out there, and like you I miss the old 8/16 bit era. I really don't think games today have the same substance as some of the older ones.

  2. Well the staff that ran the site were great, but this was inevitable. The website dealt *mainly* with DS titles, which are being policed more and more.

This happens 2 days after my other favourite site closed (tv-links.co.uk), and the poor guy got his home busted by police for having "links posted on his site".

Other victims of this recent crackdown include Mr. Modchips and Divineo (and as Seph metioned, Demonoid and OiNK).

If Google was run by a single guy on a low income - it too would have been busted a while ago. Where do we draw the line?

We could all be guilty of some small copyright infringements (I video-taped a movie off the telly once)...

  12. If you will notice the date, this was posted back in 2007. And there is a link at the top of the post, labeled “Romulation.net Cheated Death” pointing out that they found a way to return only a few short months after they got shutdown. Romulation has been back & going strong as ever for a few years now.

  15. Now they are shut down again...
    Will it stay that way?
I hope not, they had games on there, which never will be published in Europe and lots of educational roms too..and in my opinion, knowledge should be accessable/free for everybody.
Besides in my life I spent over 1500 € on video games and consoles, should be enough for one person.
And todays prices on video games are just insane I think.
For e.g. I bought Final Fantasy new in Germany and it cost 119 DM, I mean seriously whats up with that?
And Mirros Edge for PS3 usually costs 55 €, I found it on the net for 16 GBP which is a saving up to 60% and I had it in 5 days..
If they wouldn't be so greedy on the gamers I would still be buying games new from the store like I used to some time ago.
Of course I understand that game developers and co need their pay too, but they don't get to much from what they actually deserve anyway...
